7 December

They are here! They are quartering at many of the homes and lands across Bucks County, from north to south and east to west, almost five thousand in all.

December Willie told me today that the army is setting up a military hospital at Thompson’s. General Washington hasn’t heard from two divisions and they don’t know what has happened to them. Willie said that the men who are here are low. They are sick, cold, hungry and unhappy. They need help, but what can we do? Willie told Mother that some of the troops will be coming this way and will need a place to camp. Since they stay close to the river, they will encamp at Willow Wood Farm, he is sure of it.

He told us that they need food and clothing as many of the men are in shirts and breeches with only tattered old blankets wrapped around them. And some wear rags on their feet; nothing but rags.

“I heard some of them saying that the army is done for and that we can’t win,” Willie told us.

There was anguish and disappointment on Willie’s face. Mother saw it and touched his cheek with such tenderness and with tears in her eyes. “It is in God’s hands, William,” she told him. “He will guide General Washington. The Lord will lead and we must follow His will.”

Believe me, yours faithfully, Juliana-Alma
